6:40 pm - And so, it begins...
|
I still can't believe I've passed. It's all happened so suddenly - three weeks ago I was still in the middle of exams, and now I've technically started working!! Well, to be precise, I had introductory lectures from 7:45am to 2:30pm with a 15minute break today, but tomorrow I start shadowing (a nice term for 'stalking the junior house-officer who was there before you') and on Saturday there's the complete handover which means that I will be expected to be at least minimally competent.
Ha.
Haha.
In a couple of hours I go from being wildly excited to apprehension, to happiness then back to worry and anxiety. Is it normal? My parents seem to think I should be on the moon because I have a job, but truth be told, I do worry over the fact that I've gone from having zilch responsibilty to being the one responsible on the job. Thank goodness for seniors. I have no idea who they are (although I know which consultant I'm working with; my mum had to go in my stead when we had to choose as I was in Pisa at the time, seeing the email where they informed us we had to turn up at noon under the penalty of death [sort of ish] just before I left the hostel.)
As an aside, my sentences grow longer and make less sense as I proceed. But shnoo... just put it down to the adrenaline.
Firenze was all that I wished for, lovely, full of art and sculptures (and good food). So many people told me that my Italian is great that have started believing it (it was funny - I kept telling these students I was a tourist and they kept asking which part of Italy I'm from. When I told them I'm from Malta they wanted to know which part of Italy it was. I rest my case). I climbed the 464 steps up the Duomo, visited the Uffizzi and melted in front of the Botticelli paintings, oggled at the Davide and sniggered mercilessly at some of the very suggestive sculptures, ate Italian pasta drenched in olive-oil, drank red wine and tried the bistecca Florentina, haggled like a pro for some bags (and yes, my new white leather bag owns my heart) walked along the Arno and managed to cross the roads without being run over by motorini or bikes, got drenched in Siena, waited for over 2 hours at Pisa centrale and avoided a 40euro fine for not validating my train ticket....
Good times... good times... :))))

8:20 am - Arrivo Italiaaaa...
|
So, this week has been totally busy, what with running about with applications for work and stuff, meeting up with friends and just randomly haveing (plenty) of fun, making up for a year of self-imposed imprisonment :p Yesterday I took down the shelves in my room and re-fixed them, moved around all the furniture and threw out a bunch of clothes and things I don't wear/use anymore... it looks better this way - the room looks larger. I'm still lacking sleep, but hey, now it's my choice so hurrah!
Now in a couple of hours I'm off the Florence for a week... :D:D:D
Oh, and I'd better start packing XD

10:35 am - Tick-tock-tick-tock
|
I'm feeling...empty-ish.
I finished my finals yesterday an I should be celebrating, but all the euphoria has worn off, and I've only got a sense of having let myself down. I know I did my best during the year, but failed to deliver because I was so nervous.
Meh.
Now it's just a question of seeing just how badly I've let myself down.

4:01 pm - Things to look forward to...
|
I'm fluctuating between episodes of acute panic (of the omgi'msogoingtofail type) and of intense bored (of the wtfijustdon'tcareanymore style). I'm currently in bored mode, and I came across this new Disney animated movie . After the last bunch of animated stuff Disney came up with, which ranged from 'nauseatingly moralistic' to 'not as bad as expected', it promises to be entertaining... we'll see. I'm still a fan of the Disney classics so yay! Another release I'm looking forward to is Alice in Wonderland...more Tim Burton goodness! (or should I say darkness?)
Anyway. Back to the books. *sigh*

5:03 pm - 2009, coming up!
|
Ou la la.... I can't believe 2009 is here already. 2008 hasn't been the best year I've had, but apparently, my (oh-so-encouraging) friends and collegues have pointed out that 2009 will undoubtably be worse. So that's something to look forward to T_T
Going out tonight, am still uncertain about what to wear *cries* but do have a new corset which I've been dying to wear. BUT I have gained weight again :/ Cross fingers that it still fits....
Been doing the meme everyone's been doing (oh yes, I do tend to follow the trend)
~~~
1) Where did you begin 2008? At a friend's house with a group of people, half-freezing cause the heater kept doing Strange Things to the electricity and we had to switch it off. :P
2) What was your status on Valentine's Day? Hmm... let me think..... SINGLE! :p
3) Were you in school anytime this year? Am I ever not?
4) How did you earn your money? Stipend. Stipend stipend stipend. Parents also gave me money - I think I more than earned it, but they beg to differ.
5) Did you have to go to the hospital? Aha...hahahahahahahahahaha..... I'm there practically every day :p
6) Did you have any encounters with the police? I don't think so. I'm a good girl I am! :o
7) Where did you go on vacation? Scotlaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand! XD
8) Did you buy anything over $1000? Did my bank account magically inflate? No? Pity.
9) Did you know anybody who got married? My brother, my cousin and some friends of the family. It's catching I tell you!
10) Did you know anybody who passed away? Unfortunately yes :(
11) Did you move anywhere? Does a month living abroad count?
12) What concerts/shows did you go to? Zilch.
13) Are you registered to vote? Yep, and this was the first time I did so.
14) Who did you want to win Big Brother? ....why would I want to watch it in the first place?
15) Where do you live now? At home. With the parents.
16) Describe your birthday. Woke up at 5:30ish after a horrible night, dragged myself out of bed for a final bout of cramming, went for the third paper of a gruesome final, emerged with a massive headache and spent the rest of the day planning revenge, watching the telly and wondering why I put myself through all this. Cheerful no?
17) What's one thing you thought you'd never do but did in 2008? Spend over 24hours awake without getting paid for it.
18) What has been your favourite moment? Visiting Edinburgh was fantastic, but I'm guessing that spans more than a moment. :)
19) What's something you learned about yourself? Um... I am excessively hard on myself at times. Make that most of the times.
20) Any new additions to your family? New sister-in law *grins*
21) What was your worst month? It's a toss up between June and November. June was crap in some ways, but November was equally disastrous in others.
22) What music will you remember 2008 by? 'If I were a Boy'. Don't know why, it seems to be the one song I hear most often on the radio.
23) Who has been your best drinking buddy? I'm not much into drinking...
24) Made new friends? I did, and it was someone whom I thought I'd never really get on well with. So yay for that! :)
25) New best friend? Nopes. My best friends are unchangable :p
26) Best night out? No idea.
~~~~
In conclusion: HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone, and may 2009 be a better year than those before!

11:52 am - Weddings and dresses and hats, oh my!
|
|
It felt so good to be able to laze in bed this morning after the last couple of weeks. Assignments, plus exams, plus plenty (oh yes, plenty) of unwanted trouble never make for a Happy Sarah, and much less a rested one. Leastways, I'm starting to laugh and make fun at what happened, even though there's a small part of me that's still very angry at the person who started all the trouble in the first place. I once read a quote about it being easier to forgive than to forget, but if you don't forget, it's hard to really forgive.
Boo. Still too early in the morning to start philosophising!
Spent yesterday evening writing out wedding invitations with my mother as my older brother's getting married pretty soon and had to go to round to relatives this morning. I like this custom, where close family gets a call from the soon-to-be bride and groom to be invited to the wedding; there's something comfortable about it and more personal than a posted invitation with the token 'give us money as a gift please' card inserted. Mind you, if I ever get married I will probably hate going around to visit my aunts and uncles as I keep feeling I'm bothering people, but I still like the custom. Yeah, weird but whatever.
Anyway. Writing out the invitations was... interesting. The fiance and partner or guest business when you're not sure if someone is engaged or not can get a bit confusing, and as my dad's a stickler for propriety in these cases, we had to do them properly. Obviously, neither my dad nor my brother helped - E was on the plane here, and dad has squiggly handwriting and absolutely no interest in doing wedding stuff (except for criticising). Mum has lovely cursive handwriting, which looked fantastic. I write in print with an attempt at some occasional swirls, so was assigned to the envelopes.
Next step is finding a dress. Everyone else has got one already, but I can't find one!!!! :'((( Which is bad, seeing I'm one of the witnesses.
I've been to a couple of shops, but it's hard to find something which is my size and suited to a morning wedding. Shop assistants keep shoving befeathered and beplumed horrors into my face (ax oht l-gharus hi, trid tispikka! - Translation: you're the groom's sister, you have to be... visible? not sure about how to say it) or things which are extremely bland, like a shade of cream which matches my face exactly, ensuring I'll be all one colour. I'd love to find something reddish as I love the colour, but mum is very doubtful about that and I'm not sure it would be adequate anyway. Purple is another choice, but acc to brother's gf, lots of people will be wearing purple.
Then... there's the question of hats.
Hats.
I don't like that idea one teeny litle bit. There are hats, and there are hats. And there are also head-dresses, which I view with Great Suspicion. I forsee a battle royal with my mother, who will undoubtably decide on some horrible and inappropriate Thing which I will politely refuse to wear. I don't get it with mum. She's got excellent taste when it comes to her clothes, but when it comes to mine, her views and tastes go haywire.
*sighs*
I'm going to try my luck again this afternoon. A friend mentioned a shop in Hamrun and one in Vlt (Tango) and if anyone else has any suggestions, I'd be grateful!

7:43 pm - Of Exercise and Snakes
|
I'm quite happy about the fact that not only did I get myself a gym membership, but that I've actually been to the gym. Regularly even, about 3-4 times a week, which for a sworn couch potato and someone who has an absolute phobia of going to new places full of toned and skinny people is a fantastic achievement. It hasn't actually made any difference to my physique, but at least I do not pant when I climb up the stairs.
**
I had shock this morning, just as I went to get the car. I was opening the garage door when I heard a sudden hiss coming from somewhere very close to my foot. I look down and - OMG - there was a snake!!!!
Yes, a snake. About a couple of inches away from my right foot. It wasn't a large one, maybe what? 30cm? and not-poisonous (leastways, I hope the 'there are no poisonous snakes in Malta' is true) but I wasn't going to risk it getting close enough to do any damage. So I had to jump over it to get into the car. The tricky bit was closing the garage door.
Now I don't hate snakes. I think they're pretty. When they're on tv or separated from me by a glass wall, preferably two, and definitely NOT in my garage.
*sigh*
Mum went to check when she came back from work, but it wasn't there. Let's hope it decided it didn't like the place and went off to find a new home...
What if it's hiding in a dark corner, biding its time until it becomes a big ugly snake and eats me alive?? T_T

6:17 pm - On Pictures
|
When I was little, I used to love snapping away with the camera, pretending (my mother prudently used to remove the film, trying to avoid a colossal bill to develop strange photos) to be taking loads of pictures. My interest waned as I grew older (our camera also broke, and the new one was too expensive for me to handle) but was unexpectedly rekindled some years ago. When I was a second-year university student, my dad got the bright idea to invest in a digital camera as I would need it for my projects. Indeed I did, and now I barely go anywhere without my precious little camera. Consequently I take loads of pictures - printing them is another matter...
I ended up buying an extra memory card, cause when I go abroad I tend to overindulge in photo-taking. As one of my annoyed friends kindly put it, I'm the Maltese equivalent of a Japanese tourist. But sometimes, taking excessive amounts of photos is worth it, because some come exactly as I want them to. I'm particularly fond of this snapshot...
It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but variety is the spice of live ;)
Edit: I'm afraid I've no idea how to resize it, so if you'd like to see the larger version, follow this link

Spring-cleaning does have its compensations. I was browsing through my old diaries, and this old poem came up. Just in case the obvious doesn't spring up the mind, yes, I was going through a phase of Roald Dhal. :)
I also found another gem... how did I find the energy to write so much?
*grins*
On the other hand, some of the things I read were not so funny... it's kind of sad that some things haven't changed, and that in some entries, the only things which are different are my age and my handwriting (and better English than when I was 8 or 9 years old).
I turned 22 this month, but I still get upset and unhappy about the things which made me cry at 10 years of age... hmm...

3:57 pm - There was once a monster who had no name...
|
And I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads, the names of blasphemy. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, "Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him?" The Revelation of St John the Divine, Chapter 13: Verses 1 & 4
Thus begins the new manga I'm reading. The summary (taken from onemanga.com) is as follows....
Monster weaves the riveting story of brilliant Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a famous surgeon with a promising career at a leading hospital. Tenma risks his reputation and promising career to save the life of a critically wounded young boy. Unknown to him, this child is destined for a terrible fate. A string of strange and mysterious murders begin to occur soon afterward, ones that professionally benefit Dr. Tenma, and he emerges as the primary suspect. Conspiracies, serial murders, and a scathing depiction of the underbelly of hospital politics are all masterfully woven together in this compelling manga thriller.
... but the story is so much, much more than that.
Monster Manga is absolutely brilliant. It equals (and yes, maybe it even exceeds) Death Note. Every chapter holds a new insight into this murky world, practically every scene is laden with meaning. The characters are wonderfully interesting, and there isn't a second when I'm not holding my breath and wondering what's going to happen next.
I would LOVE to get my hands on the anime series. When the anime is done after the manga is finished, it's generally excellent. It's when the manga is ongoing and the anime rushes ahead (Saiyuki being a case in point) when the anime is generally substandard.
I'm still reading through Monster, but for anyone who loves a plot line full of twists and turns, brainwashing and suspense galore with a good bit of psychological issues... well, it's the one for you.
